Responding to Intimate Partner Violence

Short-Form Leadership Course

For years, the Church has proclaimed its deep commitment to preserving marriages without acknowledging one of its primary killers: abuse. According to the CDC, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been physically assaulted, raped, or stalked by an intimate partner and nearly 50% of both sexes have experienced some form of emotional or psychological abuse in a relationship. In this two-hour course, we will review relevant research, explore common missteps in church response, and offer practical guidance for walking alongside survivors of IPV.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize key forms, dynamics, and indicators of intimate partner violence.

  2. Understand common missteps in church response.

  3. Respond to disclosures and survivor needs with trauma-informed practices.

  4. Practical Guidance for walking alongside survivors of intimate partner violence.
